General Notes - All teams must have a .500 or better record during the regular season to enter the BAYS playoffs. In future test it will be abbreviated as "go .500"   In "Split Sections" - this year :

Boys Grade 10 D2 Sec A has 4 D1 and 3 D2

Girls Grade 10 has 1 D1 and 5 D2 teams.

D1 teams calculate .500 requirement using the entire season.  D2 calculates two ways - all games or just the games against D2 opponents - if either is .500 or better, the requirement is satisfied.

New this year

In Grade 6 and 8 only, if after week 5 a team moves from D2 into D1 and goes .500 in the new D1 section, they are awarded a playoff spot in the D1.  If one team moves up and goes .500 it will take Seed 5.  If two move up, tiebreakers rank the two teams moving up with the higher ranking team taking Seed 5 and the lower taking seed 6.

Specific Notes

Note 1.  Girls Grade 10.  South End is the only declared D1 team.  If they go .500, they go to MTOC.  In that case the higher ranked D2 team in A1 plays the A2 winner for the G10 D2 slot at MTOC.  Should South End not go .500, the A1 winner goes to MTOC as G10 D1 and the A2 winner goes as G10 D2.  Should there be ties on points, ties are resolved by tiebreakers

Note 2. Boys Grade 10 D1.  There are 4 teams declared for D1 [(D1) in their name].  To be eligible for the D1 playoffs a D1 team must finish in the top 3 of the section.  If the top 3 are all D1, the two highest ranked teams enter the playoffs.  Ties are resolved by tiebreakers for ranking the top 2.  If two teams of the top 3 are D1, they both enter the playoffs.  If only one team is a D1 - they go to MTOC without a playoff.  If no teams are D1, BAYS will send a D2 team.  Should a D1 team and D2 team  be tied on points for third place the D1 team will be eligible, even if ranked behind the D2 in a tiebreaker.

Note 3. Boys Grade 10 D2.  There are 3 D2 teams in section A and 10 teams in an unbalanced schedule in section B.  The top 2 D2 teams in A are Seed 1 and 2.  The top 4 of section B are seeds 3 through 6,  Tiebreakers are used to resolve any ties on points.  Semi-final 1 is seed 1 v winner of (seed 4 v 5) and Semi-final 2 is seed 2 v winner of (seed 3 v 6).  Should no D1 team qualify, semi-final 1 winner goes as D1 and Semi-final 2 winner goes as D2.

Note 4.  Girls Grade 12.   There are 4 teams declared for D1 [(D1) in their name].  To be eligible for the D1 playoffs a D1 team must finish in the top 3 of the section.  If the top 3 are all D1, the two highest ranked teams enter the playoffs.  Tiebreakers are used to resolve any ties on points among D1 teams.  Should a D1 team and D2 team  be tied on points for third place the D1 team will be eligible, even if ranked behind the D2 in a tiebreaker.   If two teams of the top 3 are D1, they both enter the playoffs.  If only one team is a D1 - they go to MTOC without a playoff.

Resolving ties on points 2024

These rules are invoked when there are a ties on points in a section for which there are BAYS Playoffs - these are not for President's Cup nor Section Championship T-Shirts.  The order tied teams are shown on the BAYS Website is irrelevant as the BAYS website does not calculate tiebreakers.  In general if there are ties for first place, the tie is broken on the field.  Each following section describes the details for resolving who goes into the playoffs or MTOC and claims which seed where seeded playoffs are scheduled.

STD -

Standard tiebreaker where one team from the section goes to the playoffs or MTOC.

  • Two teams tied for first place with equal number of points - single tiebreaker game determines who claims the seed from the section
  • Three teams tied for first place with equal number of points.  Tiebreakers rank the teams from 1 to 3.  Team 2 and 3 play a single game with the winner playing team 1 for the seed from the section.
  • Four teams tied for first place with equal number of points.  Tiebreakers rank the teams from 1 to 4.  Team 1 plays team 4 and team 2 plays team 3.  The winners play and the winner of that claims the seed from the section.

2NWC -

This tiebreaker is where two teams are taken from a section to be placed in the playoffs.

  • Two teams tied for first place with equal number of points - Tiebreakers are used to rank teams.  Higher ranked team takes higher seed and lower ranked team takes lower seed.
  • Three teams tied for first place with equal number of points.  Tiebreakers rank the teams from 1 to 3.  Team 1 takes the higher seed.  Team 2 and 3 play a single game with the winner taking the lower seed.
  • Four teams tied for first place with equal number of points.  Tiebreakers rank the teams from 1 to 4.  Team 1 plays team 4 and team 2 plays team 3.  The higher surviving seed takes the higher seed (e.g. if team 2 and team 4 win the playoff games, team 2 takes the higher seed) and the lower surviving seed takes the lower seed.
  • There is an outright winner and a tie on points between any number of teams for second place.  The outright winner takes the higher seed.  Tiebreakers rank the second place teams and the highest ranked team takes the second seed.  No games needed.

2WC -

This tiebreaker is where two teams are taken from a section to be placed in MTOC when BAYS has a wildcard.

  • Two teams tied for first place with equal number of points - Tiebreakers are used to rank teams.  Higher ranked team takes regular slot and lower ranked team takes wildcard.
  • Three teams tied for first place with equal number of points.  Tiebreakers rank the teams from 1 to 3.  Team 1 takes the regular slot .  Team 2 and 3 play a single game with the winner taking the wildcard.
  • Four teams tied for first place with equal number of points.  Tiebreakers rank the teams from 1 to 4.  Team 1 plays team 4 and team 2 plays team 3.  The higher surviving seed takes the regular slot (e.g. if team 2 and team 4 win the playoff games, team 2 takes the higher seed) and the lower surviving seed takes the wildcard.
  • There is an outright winner and a tie on points between any number of teams for second place.  The outright winner takes the regular slot.  Tiebreakers rank the second place teams and the highest ranked team takes the wildcard.  No games needed.
